Material
In Finland, the shape surrounding the fineness number on hallmarked items indicates which precious metal the item is made of. A gold mark is oval, a silver mark is rectangular, a platinum mark is diamond-shaped, and a palladium mark is a symmetrical quadrilateral.

We classify diamond jewelry into four different groups. For Kalevala, Lapponia, design, and fashion jewelry, we may pay several times more than the value of the precious metal itself. If your item does not fall into any of these categories, we buy it as precious metal scrap.

Purity
The most common gold and white gold purities are 750 (18K) and 585 (14K). The silver purity of Kalevala, Lapponia, and fashion jewelry is typically 925. The purities of design jewelry are almost always either 813, 830, 916, or 925. For precious metal scrap, the most common purity we use is 813–925.

Weight
You can weigh an item at home using a kitchen scale or, if the merchant allows it, even on a grocery store produce scale. A kitchen scale is of course not as accurate as scales inspected by Tukes, but it can still give you an approximate estimate of the item’s weight.
