Now Is a Good Time to Sell Gold
Gold Price
The gold price is currently at a historically high level. This means that old gold items may now be worth more than they were at the time of purchase. Gold is a dense and valuable material, so even a small amount can be worth a significant sum when sold.
The gold price is often a key factor when deciding whether to sell gold. By understanding how gold prices are determined, you can make better decisions and ensure you receive a fair price for your valuables. On this page, we explain the factors that affect the gold price, key terminology, price examples for different items, and how the gold price has developed over recent years.
Spot gold price
Gold Price and Market Development
The spot gold price is the real-time market price of gold, which changes continuously in response to supply and demand. Internationally, the gold price is typically quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. One troy ounce equals 31.1 grams, which is why ounce-based pricing is standard on global markets.
Below, you can see the gold price today expressed in USD per ounce and in euros per gram.

LBMA Price
How the Gold Price Is Determined
The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) sets the official gold price twice daily. This price serves as the global benchmark for gold trading and is widely used by refineries and professional gold buyers.
Because of this, the spot gold price may fluctuate slightly during the day compared to the LBMA price. Since refineries base their purchases on the LBMA rate, the calculator on the KultaRahaksi website is also based on this official benchmark.
According to international standards, the gold market price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. The gold price per gram is updated on this page and in our calculator every business day at 9:00 AM and reflects the previous business day’s price at 5:00 PM. If the global gold price rises, the calculator price increases accordingly — and vice versa.

Gold Price Growth: Nearly Tenfold Increase This Century
Measured in euros, the gold price is now almost ten times higher than at the turn of the millennium.
Any long term gold price chart or gold price diagram clearly shows this strong upward trend. In January 2000, the gold price per gram was at its lowest, approximately €8.8. A gradual increase followed, accelerating significantly after the 2008 financial crisis. The previous peak occurred between 2010 and 2012, when the gold price rose to around €40 per gram.
The current peak is in a class of its own. In April 2025, the 1-gram gold price exceeded €97. At this level, the 1kg gold price reached record highs, confirming that gold’s value has increased tenfold this century.

Gold Weight and Purity
When you sell gold items to a gold buyer, the price you receive is affected not only by the market price but also by the weight and purity of the gold.
Below are a few examples of typical gold item weights. The weight of a gold ring can also be roughly estimated based on its width. For example, a 2 mm wide gold ring often weighs around 2 grams, while a 5 mm wide ring weighs around 5 grams, and so on.
The price of a gold item is highest when it contains a high amount of gold, meaning a higher gold purity. Gold purity is usually expressed in carats, which indicates the proportion of pure gold out of 24 parts. This is why the price of 24-carat gold is the highest.
In Finland, the most common gold purity for jewelry is 14 carats (often marked as 585 or 14k). In this case, the item contains 58.5 % gold, or 585 parts per 1,000. For example, a 14k gold ring weighing 4 grams contains 2.34 grams of pure gold (24-carat gold) (4 g × 58.5 %).
Gold Carats and Corresponding Purity Values:
Gold items are often stamped with a purity mark, which is a three-digit number indicating the gold content in parts per thousand.
| Carats | Gold content (%) | Purity (parts per thousand) |
|---|---|---|
| 24 carats (24K) | 99,9 % | 999 |
| 18 carats (18K) | 75 % | 750 |
| 14 carats (14K) | noin 58,5 % | 585 |
| 9 carats (9K) | 37,5 % | 375 |
Gold Glossary: Key Terms Related to the Gold Price
When talking about the price of gold, several overlapping terms are commonly used. Here are the most important ones to know.
Spot price: The gold spot price refers to the real-time market price of gold, which is continuously updated based on supply and demand as trading takes place.
Market price: The market price of gold is often used as a synonym for the spot price, meaning it refers to the real-time value of gold.
LBMA price: The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) sets the official gold price twice a day. This so-called LBMA price is used globally as a benchmark in all gold trading. For this reason, the gold spot price may differ slightly from the LBMA prices during the day. Gold refineries use the LBMA price when buying gold.
Gold price per ounce: The troy ounce (1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams) is the standard unit of measurement used in international gold trading. The gold price per ounce is usually quoted in US dollars (USD).
Gold price per gram: The price per gram indicates the value of one gram of gold. It is derived from the ounce price by dividing it by the weight of a troy ounce, and it is usually expressed in euros.
The Gold Buying Price Is Determined by Three Factors
When you sell gold to us, the price we pay is determined by three factors: the current market price of gold, the weight of the gold item in grams, and the gold purity (carats). This is how we calculate the price for so-called scrap gold, meaning precious metal intended for melting.
We also buy gold jewelry for resale, which means we can pay more for certain items. We also pay extra for diamonds.

Questions About the Gold Price?
We use the same pricing basis for all customers, which is based on the daily global market price of gold. We offer a fair price according to the current day’s rate. Our pricing is transparent and equal for everyone. Our calculator always shows the most up-to-date price, so you can trust that you will receive a competitive offer for your gold items.

The price tables on the KultaRahaksi website are updated every business day at 9:00 AM according to the previous business day’s gold price at 5:00 PM, so you can always check the current price per gram on our website.
The price of gold is determined by its purity: the purer the gold, the higher the price. 24-carat gold is pure gold (99.9 %) and therefore commands the highest price. 18-carat gold contains 75 % gold, 14-carat gold approximately 58.5 % gold, and 9-carat gold 37.5 % gold.
For example, a 14k gold ring weighing 4 grams contains 2.34 grams of pure gold (4 g × 58.5 %). In Finland, the most common gold purity for jewelry is 14 carats, often marked as 585 or 14k. You can check the exact prices for different purities using our price calculator, as prices are updated according to the gold market price.
The price of gold has shown an upward trend in recent years. The price of gold has increased tenfold during this century and is nearly ten times higher in euros than at the turn of the millennium. Many factors affect the price, including the state of the global economy, geopolitical events, and changes in exchange rates. We continuously monitor these changes and update our prices daily to ensure we always offer the best possible price for your gold items.
According to international practice, the gold price is quoted in troy ounces and US dollars, as this is the established standard in global gold trading. One troy ounce weighs 31.1034768 grams and is different from a regular ounce. The price per gram is derived from the ounce price by dividing it by the weight of a troy ounce and converting it into euros.
The price of white gold and yellow gold is determined in the same way based on gold purity, and the colour does not affect the price of gold sold as a precious metal. In both cases, the decisive factors are gold purity (carats) and the weight of the item in grams. White gold is gold alloyed with other metals, such as palladium or nickel, to achieve its white colour, but the gold content is still determined in the same way as with yellow gold.
If the item is white gold, we may, however, pay slightly more for it, as the palladium contained in white gold has refining value in addition to the gold. In some jewelry purchased abroad, nickel may have been used instead of palladium to whiten the gold. Nickel has no value, but we pay the same price for white gold containing nickel as for white gold containing palladium, so that our pricing remains as clear as possible for customers.

“In Finland, a private individual may sell ordinary items that have been used by their own family tax-free if the total gains from sales do not exceed €5,000 per year. If your annual capital gains exceed €5,000, you must pay capital gains tax on the portion exceeding that limit.
If you sell items other than ordinary household goods used by your family, you must pay tax on the capital gain. However, tax is only payable if you sell such items and other movable property for a total amount exceeding €1,000 per year.”
